NOTGELD PAGE
7/22/05

Notgeld means 'emergency money'. It was issued in Germany 1914-23 by many cities, towns, companies and private and commercial interests. Most were struck to help with the shortage of small change.

In July, 1922 the mark was 500 to the $1, with the first reparations payment due.

In late October, 1922 with the second reparations payment due, the mark fell to 4,500 to $1.

In January, 1923 the Allies marched into the Ruhr, with the mark standing at 10,200 to $1. And in April, 1923, hyperinflation started!

By the end of November, 1923 on the black market, the rate rose to 12 trillion to $1, but the losers were the speculators who kept the flames of inflation white hot, despite the official rate being pegged at 4.2 trillion to $1.

Kriegsgeld means 'war money' and was issued during WWI.
