What is the Wilderness Road Regional Museum?
The Wilderness Road Regional Museum is an independent, non-profit
organization. The Hance-Alexander House (Wilderness Road Regional Museum)
is one of only four regional institutions of its kind functioning between
Roanoke and Abingdon, intending to preserve the Appalachian culture for all
citizens of the New River Valley.

hill just south of Exit 99 off I-81 at Dublin, Va.
Mission of the Museum
To provide a regional museum to preserve the cultural heritage of the area;
to discover and collect any and all materials relating to the history of the
said New River Valley; to provide for the housing, storing, preservation,
display and accessibility of said materials to students and the general public.
Long range plans call for the restoration of all buildings. Donations and
in-kind contributions are welcome.
We need your help today.
One current project remains to be completed on the museum grounds:
- The small log building behind the huge stone chimney needs rehabilitation.
This is sealed with wire for a granary or meat house. The foundation will
require extensive repairs.
This is a priority. Completing the above project and constructing a
paved parking lot will take time and resources. Many generous people have
helped the museum in the past, and the New River Historical Society looks
forward to continued success in fulfilling long-range plans.

The Wilderness Road Regional Museum also offers an interesting display
of Civil War items, including paper items which are shown at special times.
The museum sponsors a number of events throughout the year, including at
least two Civil War reenactment events. A selection of Civil War books is
also available on everything from battles to recipes.
